Day Fourteen: September 10th----Dingly Cliffs, Ghar Lapsi, Sliema Shore !!!!

The Majesty of Dingly Cliffs
I'm always have been impressed with the height of Dingly Cliffs! It seems that the whole world is below you when you are standing at the edge looking out. This time was no different. Greg's was the first the first time at these majestic cliffs that nature made. There was only one disconcerting fact about our visit. We were greeted by a cat that obviously had kittens. The poor creature was as skinny as a rail and my heart went out to her. The person selling sweets and some farm goods there told me that it was a cat that someone had abandoned. I was so angry that people were so inhumane and in many ways so ignorant. I offered him some money to feed her and he said that he was feeding her and that he loved animals. He didn't take any money though I would have been glad if he did. If there was any way I could have taken her back home to Canada with me, I would have. No animal should be abandoned in this way especially when pregnant with little ones. I was so very sorry to leave her there and only hope that this man who looked very kind would take her under his wing.
Back to the story of the cliffs. The cliffs seemed to rise forever though they were at their highest point somewhere near 300 metres (about 950 feet) and stretch quite aways. The cliffs slope down to some farm areas and then down again to the sea. The sheer magnitude of these cliffs are was amazing and they would be a must for any to see.
Around the cliffs is a veritable rocky terrain with vegetation that can only grow in very tough circumstances. Crown of Thorns thistles and similar plants are all that survive. The land resembles a moonscape and, as a matter of fact, part of the movie "The Mars Chronicles" was filmed here.
Busket Gardens
The Busket Gardens is part of the Presidential Summer Palace at Verdala. The area is planted with a myriad of trees from around the globe and was started by the Knights of St. John. in 1558. The gardens have been kept up ever since and had lime groves as well as olive trees and other interesting sites. Visitors come to relax in what may be the only fully treed area on the island. One thing, I remembered the last time I came that there was ice cream around. Didn't find any this time. Shucks!
Ghar Lapsi
One of the first places that I ever came to when I first came to Malta was Ghar Lapsi, a cove that has several large caverns beside it. The spot is magic to swim in with much sea life and interesting items. Pictorially it is the best and is very clean to swim in. We took some great shots of the water and those playing around in it. The area is one of the few things that has basically remained the same.
Sliema Shore
Greg was enchanted by the rocky structure of the Sliema shoreline near the promenade. It is actually quite a spot for sunbathers and swimmers alike. The wave action on turbulent or windy days is also something to watch. The rocky shoreline forms little crevices that sometimes are quite form fitting and smooth. The water action during the years has smoothed the rocks to a baby soft look. No sharp areas here. Greg was amazed and went around asking bathers and swimmers about how they liked the area. Answers were always positive.
We did see some swimmers bopping up and down in the turbulent wave action which we thought very dangerous and careless since the waves were so active that a fast retreat from the water was somewhat impossible. Not good!
However, when the water was calm or mildly active, the sea was very inviting and kind. I remember it well!
Later on in the evening, I went off to Valletta to do a favour for my nephew Michael. Then at 8:30 pm I had the pleasure of getting together with my family members in Malta, Raymond and Rita Zammit for a quick drink prior to retiring for the evening. The quick drink lasted for almost three hours which went by like a snap of the fingers. It was fun!
